Would you like to simplify your landscape painting to get at essentials?
Or use what you see in the landscape as a springboard to a completely new creation — instead of just reproducing what you see more realistically?
In this class, you will start out by discovering:
- how to simplify and loosen up your landscape painting
- how to paint from your imagination
- how to get in touch with your inner creative four-year-old, have fun, explore new possibilities, and re-discover the magic of painting
Then you will learn eight (+) different ways to create abstract landscape paintings, beginning with the one indispensable element of any landscape painting.
Before we meet, you'll also receive access to videos and handouts about:
Before we meet, you'll also receive access to videos and handouts about:
- Choosing the colors of your palette,
- Mixing colors,
- How to mix neutral colors — browns and grays,
- Different kinds of paintbrushes, and which you'll need for this class
- How to prepare your materials for painting, so you can be ready to put it all into action during the workshop!
In each class, you will learn one or more different approaches to creating an abstract landscape painting, with:
- Direct instruction on Zoom, so you can ask questions and share observations
- Time-lapse video demonstrations by the teacher — so you can see each process in action, and learn applicable techniques
- Looking at the work of historical and contemporary artists, to see the many different ways in which each approach can be taken
You’ll have time during class to put what you’ve learned into practice. Then we'll gather again so you can share what you’ve created and ask any questions that have come up for you.
Each workshop day will run from 1 PM to 4 PM Pacific Time / 4 PM to 7 PM Eastern Time.

During the next week, you can explore and develop what you’ve learned.
The next time we meet, you'll be able to follow up with any questions, share what you’ve been doing, and see the work of your fellow painters, before learning the next two approaches.

After taking Karen Lynn Ingalls's Abstract Landscape class today, I wanted to share what a dynamic, hands on, wonderful teacher she is. She packs a lot of information in one day that I will be thinking about for days as I continue painting in this new way.
She is so encouraging and knows just what to subtly suggest when you come to an impasse and you don't know what to do next. She is a magnificent painter, but not all great painters are great teachers, but she is!

Video recordings of each class session will be posted for you to refer to, too, so you're able to review anything you like, on a password-protected private page for the class.
A month after the workshop’s end, you’ll be able to meet for a bonus session, to share what you’ve been doing; see the creative directions all the other participants are taking; and ask any questions that have come up for you in the meantime.

Painting in this way strips the image down to its essence. If you usually paint more realistic-looking landscapes, it may change the way you see the world!
Who is this class for?
This class is designed for both beginners (who have at least a little bit of previous painting experience) and more experienced painters.
Your teacher will be working in Acrylic paints, which do have particular advantages, but you are welcome to work in Oil Paints or Water-Mixable Oils, if you prefer those media.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This workshop also helps support the Calistoga Art Center.

FAQs
Is this like a Paint-and-Sip-type class, where the students copy what the teacher demonstrates?
- No, most definitely not!
- You will learn how to actually paint YOUR OWN paintings, not to copy what someone else is doing.
- Because the whole point is to be creative, right? Not to be a copyist. (You can sip if you like — that's your choice!)
Do we need to buy large canvases to paint on?
- No, we'll be working on small surfaces in class (on watercolor paper).
- When you work small, you can experiment with more than one piece in a short time, during class. It's easier to try new things out.
- Working small is less intimidating, and you want to feel free to explore and experiment with each new approach, method, or technique.
- You can always apply what you've learned to larger paintings during the week, if you like — whatever size you want to work on — it's completely up to you!
What if I have to miss one of the class sessions?
- You can catch whatever you missed on the video recordings of each class session.
- Each session, including the demonstration videos, will be posted for you to watch on a password-protected private page for the class.

Former students love it!
I took an acrylic painting workshop at the Calistoga Art Center from Karen Lynn Ingalls in 2011. I was brand new to painting in acrylic and Karen’s enthusiasm was contagious.
I looked forward to those classes and with her help and encouragement kept at it, until I couldn’t because of a painful spine condition.
When I saw the announcement for Karen’s 5- hour Zoom workshop 10 years later, I decided to try it.
I had never done landscape painting before and since this was abstract landscape, it seemed like it might help me overcome my unsteady hands and difficulty in staying in one position for very long.
It was just the re-charge I needed to help me get back to making art.
Karen loves teaching and it shows. She is so generous in sharing her knowledge with students. She also is one of the kindest people I’ve known and somehow manages to balance this with honest helpful critiques.
Those 5 hours plus the follow up meeting were so full of fun, experimenting with different approaches for putting paint on the canvas, and sharing with the group as well as learning about other abstract landscape artists.
Karen gives all she has to teaching others to develop their skills and find their own style. She is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and caring teacher.
