Discover how to translate your own photos into expressive paintings, with acrylic paints.

It's not about simply copying a photograph.

Your photos can be a
springboard to take your painting someplace new.

In this class, we keep it simple and take the process step-by-step,  in a spirit of discovery and experimentation.

And we do it without judgment and critiques.

Why is that, you might wonder? Aren't critiques a part of the learning process?

They don't have to be. It's essential to tame that inner critic in order to be truly creative — and creativity is what this is all about.

Then you'll take what you see, and create something new, with your vision — with your unique visual voice.

And that's a truly creative way to respond to the beauty in the world around us!

Who is this class for?

This class is for people with at least some acrylic painting experience (Acrylic Painting 101 is a great way to begin, if you haven't done much painting yet.)

What if I'm using oil paints?

If you're comfortable with oil paints, you're welcome to use them. You won't be able to do the kind of layering we'll be able to do with acrylics, and acrylics also dry much faster, which can be a big advantage.

You can also paint your first layers in acrylics, and then paint over the top of them in oils, if you like. (Not the reverse — acrylics won't stick to the oil paint, but oil paints will stick to acrylics.)

What will I have created by the end of the class?

You'll have your own small landscape painting, created either from your own photograph or one of Karen's photos, which she will provide as a resource you can use.

You'll also learn how to prepare your photographs for painting, and — for future reference — how to take landscape photographs that give you plenty to work with!

You'll also get Karen's eBook on Landscape Painting, as a resource you can turn to for your landscape painting from here on.
